Barnet Rubenstein, Interior / Exterior, oil on canvas, 1981-87
Still life was Rubenstein's primary interest; he produced paintings that were classical at heart, yet quirky and endearing. This delightful, geometry-ridden work contrasts still life elements in Rubenstein's home with the jumbled backyard view outside his window in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Rubenstein entered the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the late 1940s and taught there from 1967 to 2000. "Barney" was instrumental in making me appreciate the complexities of realist painting. As a class we would analyze slides of the old masters and contemporary realists. By example, he was able show that an artist's life was serious business but had its humorous side too. I received a Studio Diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1976
George Nick, Athens in America, oil on canvas, 2005
George Nick was a great help. He taught me to be bold, courageous and not be afraid of reworking a painting. Nick paints landscapes and still - lifes but is best known for architectural streetscapes and images of machines, from cars and trains to industrial sites. A resident of Concord, Massachusetts, Nick studied with Edwin Dickinson in the 1950s and taught at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, from 1969 to 1994. I attended Mass Art for my M.F.A. in 1981
Nick's work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Hirschhorn Museum and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., among many others.
Wolf Kahn, A White Pond in the Woods, pastel on paper, 1990 I had the good fortune to take a pastel workshop with Wolf Kahn which I found very helpful. I especially appreciated his pastel demonstration and his attitude towards art making. Kahn regularly exhibits at galleries and museums across North America. Selected museum collections include Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA.
